Being a bluegrass musician himself, my grandfather had a reputation for his work on stringed instruments. Merle sent his assistant, with payment, to purchase the guitar. My grandfather dismissed him, stating "Merle needs to come get this guitar in person". The story goes that a few months later, Merle came and got the guitar. This was before my time, I have no first person account of my own. The waters become very muddy over time and retelling. I send Merle a letter back in 2005, hoping for confirmation one way or another... sadly, I got no reply. So, I guess I will never really know if a bluegrass musician from the Appalachian mountains had Merle on a hook for his custom guitar flavor. All parties have passed and most certainly the details lost.Adam Halfhillhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11253318037275062696noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4613893995913129147.post-81692592169335914172018-09-20T04:13:50.207-07:002018-09-20T04:13:50.207-07:00the signature telecaster is named after merle'...the signature telecaster is named after merle's toy fox terrier tuffy, whose pic is on the guitarEddiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05961810673379961585noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4613893995913129147.post-30216893498132482352018-01-25T20:13:48.205-08:002018-01-25T20:13:48.205-08:00Merle did buy the Lefty Frizzell guitar. They all flew to California and took the guitar to Merle. He played it and then told them he wated to keep it overnight and would make his decision the next day. The Retrofret people were apprehensive, but Marty Stuart said he would guarantee it, so they agreed. The next day a deal was made and Merle owned the guitar. There are photos of Merle with David Frizzell (Lefty's brother) with the guitar in Hag's living room. As of this writing, it is still in the possession of his widow. As a side note, David Frizzell had a replica made that can be seen at the Willie Nelson General Store Museum in Nashville.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07387524094492972689noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4613893995913129147.post-81266533273918409742016-06-21T20:03:41.674-07:002016-06-21T20:03:41.674-07:00You noted that he did not own Lefty's guitar, ...You noted that he did not own Lefty's guitar, but some of the Frizzell family says that he did. The Gibson J-200 Bigsby was being sold by Retrofret a few years ago and I had heard Merle bought it. ferris209https://www.blogger.com/profile/11439947197167625483noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4613893995913129147.post-76363635998066072852016-04-23T17:46:15.715-07:002016-04-23T17:46:15.715-07:00Thanks Eric for stopping by.
